EXCITING NEWS!!!
Canandaigua Outlet Cleared / Planned Wild Water Derby Expansion:
Most people have heard the rumor that the Wild Water Derby is considering adding a flat water event (as in no rapids). The rumor is correct and today we finished the biggest hurdle – clearing 6 miles of the Canandaigua Outlet that had never been cleared before. After coordinating with Ontario County Soil and Water and eight weekends of rain or shine work and standing in knee deep to waist deep water, the Canandaigua Outlet is now cleared from Canandaigua Lake to the starting line of the traditional derby. The Outlet is now easily navigable by canoe, kayak and most reasonably sized rafts, without portage. The work was completed by volunteers and at no cost to taxpayers, land owners or Ontario County Soil and Water. More than 13 shore to shore log jams that were cut through or removed with the largest dam being more than 30’ in thickness, branches piled up 6’ above the surface of the water, and a difference in water depth of 4’ from one side of the dam to the other. Along with the massive log jambs, there were more than a dozen trees that spanned from one shore to the other that were either cut through or removed completely with some log diameters exceeding 36”. Along with those, there were approximately 3 dozen additional trees that projected out into the water that were also cut back for safety and to resist becoming future log jams. Activity in the water did not seem to upset the wildlife as 4 doe, 2 buck, dozens of duck and multiple blue heron were spotted along with a high number of fish and one turtle. The Chamber continues to move forward with its plans for a new series of events suitable for family paddlers, lake kayakers and recreational canoeist. The Chamber has tentative partnering arrangements with at least one marina and will have available canoe packages and kayak packages available for families who always wanted to try a kayak or canoe but did not have access to a craft, all of the equipment. As it stands, the intent is to have the flat water, slaloms and sprints on Saturday and the raft race on Sunday But we will confirm this as soon as the schedule has been finalized.
