Welcome to the Wild Water Derby. If you are unfamiliar with the Derby, it started back in the mid 1970’s and ran annually for more than three decades. After a nine year hiatus and almost two years of planning, the Derby was reintroduced in 2006.
Today's Wild Water Derby is designed to be a fun event that the whole family can enjoy. The race always proves to be very entertaining, especially the homemade rafts as they battle for the coveted "Most Enterataing Raft" award. There are numerous vendors displaying their local artistians work and this year you'll even get the fine aroma of Starbucks coffee as they will be serving up some nice warm beverages. Keep in mind the Derby has changed to become more family oriented, there are no alcoholic beverages allowed at the Derby. In order to keep the event a family event and the safest event possible we ask that everyone comply with this request.
Although a few things have changed, but one thing has not and that is proceeds from this event benefit non-profit organizations such as Lions Club, Rotary International, 4H, Youth Sports, YMCA, Church Organizations and the Chamber of Commerce community efforts. Also one of our sponsors, Starbucks is donating a portion of their proceeds to "Make Your Mark" a grant program which is focusing on a continued effort of cleaning the Canandaigua Outlet. So your attendence and support of the Wild Water Derby will not only provide you with some fun entertainment but you will also be helping the community and the environment.
Our big hearted Chamber is very aware of the economic conditions effecting many families. For 2009, any previous participants who have lost their job, or who have spouses who have lost their job, may deduct $15 from their registration fee and the registration fee for any dependent children. Proof of unemployment and dependency is required with each registration form and registration MUST be postmarked PRIOR TO APRIL 15th. |

There is also the “Water Safety & Awareness” portion of the event with a bit of conservation and stewardship. This part of the Derby is co-hosted by “Safe Kids Finger Lakes” and is held near the main viewing area in the park and in downtown Shortsville. This award winning event includes some very interesting hands on displays, activities and games. Some of the things the kids can see and play on include US Coast Guard boats, “Seamor” a US Army Corps of Engineers robot, “Rescue Rodney” the drowning dummy, Specialty Dive Teams; bounce house, and other neat stuff. Virtually everything is free and with the whistles, Frisbees and other goodies that the kids can receive, we actually invest a very big chunk of change to get this important message across. Soak it in and help us reinforce it with the young chillins’.
One last bit of information is please leave all pets at home. Although we agree your dog, is incredibly cute we need to ensure a good traffic flow and maintain the safest environment for all. We look forward to seeing you at this year's event! |
